I Could Have Been a Rolypoly.
(Original post written April 25, 2024 on Perrine Family Mercantile’s facebook page)
I was out in the garden today, weeding (as one does, when hoping to grow food).
It was peaceful. I could hear the water doing it's thing. I could hear birds twittering. It's a weekday, so the droning of lawn mowers and the like we hear on the weekends were blessedly silent.
As I sat there, examining the plants and pulling weeds, I saw a fuzzy bee, a butterfly, a ladybug, and a baby roly-poly pass me by..
Apparently today was a big day for such critters in the garden.
All this to share:
I love roly polys. I might like them more than I like bumblebees or ladybugs. They're a crustacean, and they are probably the bug I was most enamored with as a child.
I would sit and poke at them, watching in facination as they rolled their bodies into tight balls, as they were trying to just live their best roly-poly lives and not get crushed, eaten, or maimed by curious small children.
As I watched this roly-poly, I thought about their lives. They're always on their way to go and do something, and I'm sure they take a certain satisfaction in the jobs their appointed by their Creator to accomplish. Who knows if they have thoughts, or dream, or do anything beyond follow the instincts they're equipped with.
Overall, not a bad life. But really? I'm really thankful I wasn't created to be a Roly-Poly.
